UAE Tax Registration Number (TRN) Guide

Most of the time as a tax expert I come across many situations where I see many businesses struggle to get their payments or may receive notices for penalties due to not including the TRN in their invoices. Most of the businesses are either unaware of where to get the TRN or may not understand the importance of getting the TRN and including it in the invoices.

Underestimating the importance of the TRN might take the businesses to more critical circumstances, which could go beyond the penalties. In this blog I will provide you with the guidelines of how to get the TRN and what its importance is.

What is a Tax Registration Number in the UAE?

For the businesses and new entrepreneurs who don’t know what a TRN is, let me explain it for them. TRN is a unique number that is provided by the FTA for the entities that are registered under any tax regime. This number must be utilized for ensuring the compliance while making the transactions. This number must be included in the invoices and other tax-related documents wherever necessary.

Why is it Important to Get Your TRN in the UAE?

If the businesses are registered under any tax regime, then it is mandatory to get the TRN. All the businesses in the UAE must get registered using the Emaratax portal if they meet the eligibility criteria and must apply for the TRN via the portal.

When any of the businesses is registered under the VAT, it may receive the TRN, which would distinguish the business from any other and would be used to identify itself during the FTA procedures.

This unique TRN would be used by the FTA to track the business and its financial transactions to ensure its compliance with the regulations.

What are the Documents You Must Have to Get the TRN?

Now the next most common question asked by most of my clients is what documents should they keep with themselves while registering under the VAT and to get the TRN?

In short, there are numerous documents that must be maintained by the businesses during the registration process. The FTA may further demand other documents too, if they require any further insights about the businesses. Some of the common documents that must be maintained include the following:

    • The business incorporation certificate
    • The Memorandum of Association
    • The Articles of Association
    • The copy of the passports of the directors of the business, partners, and authorized signatories
    • The copy of the Emirates ID of the key personnel
    • The copy of the proof of authorization for VAT registration
    • Contact details
    • Copy of the bank statements
    • Financial statements
    • Any other documents that would be required as and when demanded by FTA during registration

How to Apply for a TRN in UAE

Businesses may still be unaware of the process to apply for the TRN and hence may get stuck during the application procedures, or else the application may get delayed. The procedure to apply would include the following:

    1. The first step would include the creation and activation of the EmaraTax account via the FTA website.
    2. After creating the account, log in to the EmaraTax account and navigate to the dashboard.
    3. The next step would include the creation of the taxable person profile, which would require you to include the business details, such as the legal name of the business, trade name, and contact details, etc.
    4. After the details are being provided, access the taxable person account by clicking “View.”
    5. The next step is crucial, which is the registration for the VAT. Under the “Value Added Tax” section, click on “Register” to start the process.
    6. Complete the application form by providing all the required details and the documents that are instructed.
    7. After uploading the documents, thoroughly review all the details and documents and ensure that these are accurate, as this would ensure that your application process is smooth.
    8. The step would include the verification and approval by the FTA; once the approval is provided, you may receive the certificate for the registration, which would reflect the VAT TRN.

These are the major steps that must be followed by the businesses to get the VAT TRN without any complications.
